This study adopts a service design perspective to explore the journey experiences of middle-aged and older adults with physical disabilities who participated as pioneers in the Taiwan Mazu pilgrimage, in response to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)’s call for equal participation. Employing a three-stage qualitative design, the research integrates user journey maps and in-depth interviews with five assistive device users and five experts or organizers. The findings reveal that key pain points extend beyond physical infrastructure to include information opacity and heavy reliance on informal manpower. However, the unique “bittersweet experience” allows participants to perceive physical suffering as a life practice of spiritual transformation. This study proposes a service ecosystem encompassing physical mobility, cognitive mastery, and social support. It argues that accessibility goals should go beyond mere convenience; instead, they must distinguish between preserving “ritual suffering” and eliminating “structural barriers,” thereby upholding participants’ “right to suffer fairly.” The study further suggests transforming informal social support into stable institutional systems, alongside implementing information equity and inclusive ritual spaces, to ensure equitable participation rights for individuals with disabilities.
