This study compared park playgrounds in western Taiwan that either met or did not meet the distinctive design criteria in terms of playground equipment configurations and play-support functions. Quota sampling and field inspections were used to select 60 park playgrounds across the northern, central, and southern regions, resulting in 30 playgrounds in each of the two groups. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and one-way multivariate analysis of variance. The results revealed no significant between-group differences in the installation rates of any equipment type. Slides, climbing equipment, and swings were the predominant equipment types in both groups. Of the nine play-support functions examined, six showed no significant differences. Although the multivariate tests for the remaining three functions were significant, between-group differences were identified only in individual subitems. The group meeting the distinctive design criteria scored higher on the subitems of sensory design variation and spatial comfort, whereas the group not meeting the criteria scored higher on functional play, physical fitness, and gross motor activity. Both groups scored relatively low on functions related to exploration and material manipulation. Overall, the two groups showed no clear distinctions in playground equipment configurations or most play-support functions, and the differences were limited to a small number of subitems. These findings may inform the planning and evaluation of park playgrounds.
