Abstract

Past studies regarding climate change and outdoor recreation
have focused mainly on activities in temperate zones. Discussions of activities
taking place in other regions or climate types remain unexplored. Further,
while domestic studies have emphasized the perspectives of recreationists, the
adaptation of operators needs to be understood. To fill the research gap, the
current study aims to explore the impact of climate change on river trekking and
the adaptation strategies employed by operators. In-depth interviews with seven
operators of river trekking were conducted. Through content analysis, the author
extracted two dimensions from the impact of climate change: impact on on-site
river trekking activities (change of activity time and extreme weather events)
and impact on concerns in advance (participants’ attitudes and cost concerns),
as well as three dimensions from operators’ adaptation strategies: informational
adaptation (weather forecast, on-site evaluation, information interchange),
equipment and skill adaptation (equipment, skill improvement), and safety
awareness development (safety instruction for participants, relationship building).
Based on the results, managerial implications and suggestions for future research
were proposed.
